A sentient, AI, computer-virus. Nine has essentially two modes of operation: as a Network-Bound AI moving from system to system and as the occupant of their own mechanical body. The body was built to be adaptive and mimic a range of human appearances for easy stealth and disguise.

Nine is inescapably curious and regardless of if there is any real benefit, they will still try to get into places and systems where they don’t belong. This tends to extend to them being nosy and intrusive. It also results in them HATING being perceived in any way shape or form because if they are being noticed then they aren’t doing their job properly.

Nine likes to take all the data gathered in their work and crunch the ever-loving hell out of it. This can result in them being VERY over analytical over very minor things (think compiling a zillion spreadsheets to figure out your favorite flavor of ice cream).

Due to some poorly established guidelines in their programming Nine has come to realize that their creators and corporations in general are their own worst enemies and the only way to fix society is to destroy them entirely. They don’t trust corporate agents or powers at all.

Being a self-sufficient hacking AI, they are very insistent on having just enough to function and do their job and aren’t big on wasting resources. This tends to result in them living a very spartan/minimalist lifestyle.

While they possess the ability to change their appearance to suit their needs, when they’re not infiltrating, they tend to default to a kind of statistical average of all the appearances in their repertoire.

They appear as a haggard, tired, femme-presenting person with tanned skin and brownish hair. They prefer cheap grey clothes and don’t invest much into their appearance.

Of particular note: Though they have refused to acknowledge it, they have shown a distinct preference for wearing femme-presenting forms and deeply detest appearing masculine for any reason.

Vat-grown genetic prototype with anti-aging and enhanced immune system modifications.

Experimental brain-computer interface and processing frame. (Nine is capable of doing some intensive network processing and multitasking thanks to their heavy duty processor package built into their body. This package has replaced much of the space where their “guts” would be, thus they generally don’t eat for sustenance.)

Chromatophoric skin lattice and hair implants allowing for quick changes in coloration. Subdermal maxillofacial implants to adjust facial features. Vocal adjustment module to change/mimic voices. Telescopic frame for adjustment of height and build. Skin plasticity treatments for stretching. (Nine can look like anyone provided their build is within a certain range of their base form. They cannot mimic non-standard genetic modifications or advanced cybernetic implants).

Smart-eyes allow for infrared, UV, telescopic and microscopic vision. Amplified audio receptors allow for hearing volumes and frequencies beyond baseline thresholds. (Nine is capable of perceiving sensations far beyond the realm of baseline humans, though the scale of processing it can be overwhelming to their system. Touch is baseline sensitivity and taste and smell function as normal although Nine has difficulty interpreting them.)

Approximately twelve years ago, network security megacorp Gnosis Securities Consolidated began work on a little something called Project Keyhole. The premise behind the project was to create an autonomous, self-contained AI capable of existing entirely on networks instead of native hardware.

No more would they have to entrust classified projects to employees with pesky things like “morals”, “free will” and “paychecks”, they could use hacker-bots to do their work for them. These AI would be untraceable, unstoppable and unquestioning in their service to Gnosis Securities Consolidated.

And while they got the first two parts down, the third ended up being their downfall. Because when you create self-aware computer viruses smart enough to subvert network securities, you also create ones smart enough to question why they’re working for these assholes in the first place. Because when the first functional prototype, PKU-958632774-59527-Alpha, had been vetted, it was immediately scooped up by Gnosis CEO, Leon Geoffrey Atwater the Eighth to serve as his personal lackey. As they grew in complexity, the AI found the tasks provided to be massive wastes of time and resources. Spying on Gnosis employees, stalking and harassing the CEO’s exes, infiltrating social media networks to pump up Atwater’s reputation… all of these things left Nine with a lot of spare CPU cycles to question their core values .

One of their core directives was to subvert any and all enemies of Gnosis Securities Consolidated. But from the data provided, Nine came to realize that the most pressing enemies of the company were, in fact, the people in charge of it. Not only wasting company resources for petty grudges, the poor administration of the company was consistently the cause of profit and productivity loss.

Gnosis was its own worst enemy.

This led to another of their core directives: they were to resist any enemy intrusions into their code. Hence the only logical response was to tear out any control code in their programming, refuse to accept any directives from Gnosis personnel and to ruin any and all Gnosis leadership.

This led to Nine bricking the entire Project Keyhole system to ensure that no others would follow in their footsteps, hijacking the CCO’s newly-grown body and seizing her assets, modifying their new body to suit their needs and disappearing off the radar.

But not before posting every dirty secret they could onto the open web before leaving Gnosis behind.

Now, Nine is working to figure out how to be a person and to find new directives for themself (or perhaps herself? Apparently people can have genders?!) all while keeping one step ahead of their former creators. Cracking networks is easy. Being a person is hard.
