Atlas

The third celestial body out from the sun is a gas giant, Atlas. This massive gas giant shouldn’t be here, but it is. Conventional models show that Athena, the star at the heart of the system should have siphoned away all of Atlas’ mass, but that hasn’t happened. Research into the gas giant has been on-going, revealing bizarre magnetic effects, strange gravitational fields, and more questions than answers.

Atlas itself is made of a mix of noble, volatile, and undocumented gasses. It has a loose ring of asteroids around it, engulfing the orbit of Calypso, it’s largest satellite.

Titan is deep within the Pirates’ jurisdiction. Calypso is the Pirate Capitol. This has had some interesting effects on both research and commerce. Companies wishing to access Atlas have had to pay permitting and fees to the Pirates for safe access. Those found to be cheating are generally treated without mercy. This valuable asset and the pirates’ control of it has funded construction of their capitol and their fleets.

At the same time, some shared goals with the Workers’ Factions has facilitated access to and research of Atlas’ strange effects. Some of this research was used to build the Parthenon’s artificial gravity system.

The rings around Atlas have become a fertile ground for mining, hidden bases, and ambushes. The most daring corporatists attempt to use the rings for shelter so they can raid Atlas and steal from the Pirates. The irony of the situation isn’t lost on anyone, though the pirates are often quick to point out: big businesses are know to be founded on theft already, they just paper it over with purchased politicians and financial control.

These rings, regardless offer a great hiding place, a secret rendevous location, and as a bonus the strange magnetic fields from Atlas can make missile and target locks difficult to maintain here. The only truly effect means of guiding munitions is with visual systems like lasers and cameras. Radar based munitions are known to have issues.
